The Midwest Construction Hiring Problem: Good People Aren’t Looking

Hiring in construction has never been simple. In the Midwest right now, it’s even tougher.

The reason isn’t necessarily a lack of workers. It’s a lack of available workers.

As of July 2026, unemployment sits at just 2.9% in Nebraska, 3.2% in Iowa, 3.8% in Kansas and 3.6% in Missouri—all below the national rate of 4.1%.

At the same time, construction employment continues to grow. Nebraska construction employment is up 5.5% year-over-year, while Iowa is up 3.9% and Kansas 5.0%.

The best candidate may already have a job.

That changes how companies need to recruit.

Posting a position and waiting for applications only reaches part of the market. Superintendents, project managers, estimators, skilled tradespeople and construction leaders who are performing well often aren't actively searching. Reaching them requires relationships, direct outreach and an understanding of what would actually motivate someone to make a move.

And finding them is only half the battle.

Compensation matters—but getting it right matters more.

A salary range that was competitive two years ago may not be competitive today. On the other hand, simply throwing more money at a position isn't a sustainable hiring strategy.

Companies need to understand what the market is actually paying for that position, in that geography, with that level of experience. Accurate salary banding helps employers attract talent without unnecessarily overpaying—and can uncover internal compensation issues before they become retention problems.

Hiring someone doesn't mean you've solved the problem.

Construction still recorded roughly 1.74 million quits nationally during 2025, and another 143,000 construction employees voluntarily left jobs in June 2026 alone.

Retention starts before the offer letter. Compensation, expectations, career growth, company culture and simply putting the right person in the right seat all matter.

That's Where Tin Cup Talent Comes In.

Tin Cup Talent helps Midwest construction and industrial companies compete for talent differently.

We help companies identify and recruit passive candidates, understand competitive salary bands, improve job descriptions and hiring processes, and think beyond filling today's opening toward building a team that stays.

Because in a market with 3% unemployment, you don't need more applicants. You need better access to the right people.

Build better teams. Create better opportunities. Strengthen the communities we call home.
